Silicates - inorganic all-round talents

Silicates are found in detergents, paper, paints & coatings, and catalysts. These versatile fusion products ensure high product quality and perform crucial functions in industrial processes.

Cognis uses advanced technologies to produce its sodium and potassium silicates. Silica sand and sodium or potassium carbonate are fused at 1400 degrees Celsius into an amorphous glass that can be dissolved in autoclaves to produce liquid silicates. The Duesseldorf site operates several furnaces of different sizes, including the largest silicate furnace in the world today.

In addition to the classical fusion process, we also produce liquid sodium silicates by direct attack from sand and caustic soda.
In the production and application of silicates, we can look back on more than 100 years of experience. Today, our silicate production is incorporated in the integrated Cognis Management System for safety, health, environment and quality (SHEQ). It meets all requirements of the ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 standard, thus ensuring the highest possible quality for our silicate products.
